The Witch Cat

There was a man who worked at Brownrigg Mill. He worked at the mill and ground up corn each day and returned in the evening to his only daughter. One day he was walking home by a river when he saw a woman step out of a boat. She turned to face him and he thought that she was the prettiest lady he had ever seen. She told him of her late husband reminding him of his own wife who was also dead. He took her home. He introduced his daughter to Faye, as the lady begged them to call her.

The man wanted his daughter to like Faye. Whenever Faye tried to come near the girl or touch her, she would run away from her. Faye's eyes would then glow like fire. The man's neighbors were jealous and started to accuse Faye of being a witch. The man ignored them and regarded them as just being jealous and thought nothing of their remarks. Soon the two were married, but the daughter still didn't like Faye and the neighbors were still jealous.

Strange things began happening around the mill. When the man came to work each day, the machinery was rusty and broken. The bags of corn were cut open and spilling on the floor. The man thought that his neighbors were trying to get revenge on him for marrying Faye. One day, though, he had had enough of it. When the day was over he closed up the mill and pretended to be heading home. He had taken an axe and hid in the woods waiting for the trouble makers to arrive.

Suddenly, a violent storm came upon him. He was used to these kinds of storms and didn't leave his spot. The storm grew more violent. He looked toward the mill to see if anyone was coming and spotted a mass of black moving towards him. He gripped the axe handle and stood up. As the mass came closer, he realized it was hundreds of black cats. They were bigger than average and their eyes were fixed on him. They came at him with claws ready and mouths open.

He swung his axe, trying to defend himself from the cats. He began to retreat out of the woods, still swinging his axe. He cut open the right paw of one of the big cats. It fell away from him and he ran home. He had many cuts from the claws. His daughter was nowhere in sight. He ran to his bedroom to find Faye lying there in a pool of blood. Her right arm had a big gash in it. Before he could say anything, she jumped off the bed. Before she touched the ground, her body changed into that of a big black cat.

She ran out of the house. He followed her and the hundreds of black cats joined her. The man backed up against a cliff. Suddenly, the cats all jumped at him and he fell. The river flowed below him and hundreds of cats followed him over. No one knows what happened to him. Some say that his body was never found. Others say that a fisherman found a body of a man clinging to a black cat with a severed right paw.
